Filtering through your clothes part 1

Finally after a couple of weeks here are the result of the make your own fabric filters.

The reason for the delay? During the first set of testing you could still taste fabric softener! That gave the coffee a syrupy floral chemical taste that was probably not healthy to drink. So, we took to soaking them as an attempt to remove this.

There were a few filter based techniques that we used, but in this post we will talk about the filter cone, using:

200ml water
15g medium grind coffee

Firstly, we used the sock and then the polo shirt. Once the material has been attached, put the ground coffee into the filter and pour water over being careful for the filter not fall into the cone and the water not going over spilling.

In the cup!
In both cases the fabric worked well with no grinds coming through
which had been one of the main worries and, although you could still taste softener, it was more subtle. Enough of the coffee flavour came through to give a good idea of what the
cup would be like once the 'filter' had been used a few times.

All in all, I would recommend making your own filters, however, I will say please
rinse whatever material you are going to use thoroughly first.
Otherwise your coffee will be unpleasant to drink and make you ill!
